The madness of Giuseppe Rivolta: the Giro Rosa will take place

Nine stages are scheduled, including an inaugural team time trial in Grosseto, for a total of 975.8 kilometers, with departures and arrivals located in Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Campania and Puglia, where the grand finale will be held in Motta Montercorvino. The very serious global pandemic, caused by the spread of Covid-19, had first forced the organizers of the “Giro Rosa Women’s World Tour” to suspend the race, initially scheduled for last July. Rivolta and his collaborators, however, have always reaffirmed their firm will to carry out the most important international cycling event in stages, in full compliance with all the hygiene and health regulations required by law. All by reorganizing an event of this magnitude in just over a month. Only a small sacrifice agreed with the institutions: the stages in 2020 will be nine, instead of the usual ten, to allow the athletes to reach Switzerland in time for the world championship, until a few hours ago, scheduled for the week following the conclusion of the Giro Rosa.

Giuseppe Rivolta declared: «Sport in general and cycling in particular have always been synonymous with self-denial, dedication to a cause, commitment, suffering and love. The difficult period that our company is going through is faced also thanks to these values. This is why we did not want to abandon the Giro Rosa, we did not want to give up, we fought and made sacrifices so that the magic of the peloton on the roads can be repeated again this year, albeit with a different place on the calendar. We want the 31st edition of the Giro Rosa to become a symbol of the restart of a country. A chance to get out of the greyness that this year does not seem to want to abandon. The whole world and with it Italy have gone through a dramatic period: now there are the conditions to start again. We will do it in complete safety but we will do it. For the respect we owe to the girls, the teams, those who have always believed in us, the sponsors and the public. With the humility and pride that have always characterized us».

Thus, the Giro Rosa, in addition to being the most important stage race on the women's calendar, also becomes the only stage race on the same calendar that will take place in this very special season. Patron Rivolta holds firmly to one point: «Cycling cannot exist without an audience. We want the public on our streets. However, we address an appeal to pubblic: respect social distancing, wear a mask and take all the measures required by health protocols. By following this path, you are welcome. The Giro Rosa is yours too».

The best athletes on the international cycling scene, belonging to the 24 U.C.I. teams Women’s World Tour, will battle on the streets of central and southern Italy. Below is a brief presentation of the expected fractions.

1-Friday 11 September. Grosseto-Grosseto, team time trial, 16.8 km
The dances will start with a team time trial of just over 16 kilometers along the roads of the Grosseto area. No particular elevation difficulties expected. The teams of specialists will be the masters. High averages and gaps that could already address the race of some of the favorites in a certain way.

2-Saturday 12 September. Civitella Paganico - Arcidosso, 124.8 kilometers
The maximum female stage race will remain in the province of Grosseto for another challenging stage. A path full of pitfalls from the first kilometers: after just 14 kilometers, in fact, in Cinigiano, you will face a first sector of dirt road. A few kilometers of plain and then the grand finale: it will turn around Monte Amiata and the athletes will face the ascent of Seggiano: just over 4 kilometers of dirt road with important slopes. At the end there will be only 11 kilometers to the finish.

3-Sunday 13 September. Santa Fiora - Assisi, 142.2 kilometers
No peace for the athletes. The third fraction will be characterized by continuous ups and downs that will ferry the race towards Assisi. At the fiftieth kilometer the first Grand Prix of the Mountain in San Casciani dei Bagni, third category. From that moment the track seems to soften: it is an illusion. The finish is all upwards towards Assisi where a first-class GPM is located.

4-Monday 14 September. Assisi-Tivoli, 170.3 kilometers
It is the longest stage of the Giro Rosa 2020. The data speak of only one third category GPM in Arrone after 70 kilometers of racing. The altimetry, in reality, is the classic one of the routes of central-southern Italy. The plain must be looked for with a magnifying glass. The finish straight towards Tivoli, in fact, rises constantly.

5-Tuesday 15 September. Terracina-Terracina, 110.3 kilometers
It starts from Terracina to return after 110 kilometers and two Gpm. The first in the second category in Itri, after 50 kilometers of racing. The second is at the 80th kilometer in Monte San Biagio. From there to the finish line there is still a long way to go and if the teams of the more resistant sprinters find an agreement there will be no bread for other teeth.

6-Wednesday 16 September. Torre del Greco-Nola, 97.5 kilometers.
A third category Gpm in Sarno, after 31 kilometers. Then a slight but steady climb towards Monteforte Irpino. From that moment downhill and plain to the finish in Nola.

7-Thursday 17 September. Nola-Maddaloni, 112.5 kilometers
Towards the end of the Giro Rosa, with their energy already reduced to a flicker, the athletes will face another complex stage. The first kilometers do not foresee any particular difficulty, the situation changes markedly starting from kilometer 82, in Caserta. Here begins the climb to the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, a third category roughness. At the top you go down, you pass the finish line for the first time and go up again. On the second pass to the summit, final dive towards the finish line of Maddaloni.

8-Friday 18 September. Castelnuovo della Daunia-San Marco La Catola, 91.4 kilometers
Penultimate fraction. Short stage, the shortest, but definitely important. Prelude to the final judgment on the fate of the race. Two second-class roughness to face and an uphill finish. It starts already uphill, then descends towards the flying finish line of Lucera. The first roughness is placed in Volturino, after 50 kilometers of running: from that moment the athletes will no longer see the plain until after the finish line. In fact, between climbs and descents you will reach the final climb towards San Marco La Catola.

9-Saturday 19 September. Motta Montecorvino-Motta Montecorvino, 109.8 kilometers.
Traditionally, the final stage of the grand tours is a stage on the plains, a footbridge. Not here. The final stage of the Giro Rosa 2020 is a stage that has the cards to significantly change the general classification. The organizers have in fact designed a circuit structured route and focused on the ascent of the Volturno. Four laps of 27.5 kilometers around the same roughness which, on the third lap, will also be second category GPM. The accumulated lactic acid could play tricks. The conclusion will still be uphill.

The details and maps of the stages of the “Giro Rosa” will be available from Monday 17 August 2020 on the official website
